Founder and Director

Hello! I am Dr. Janice Kuo and I am the Founder and Director of Well Within DBT. I received my Ph.D. at the University of Washington where I was directly mentored and supervised by the developer of DBT, Dr. Marsha Linehan. After receiving my doctorate, I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. I am currently faculty in the psychology department at Palo Alto University, and am a core faculty member of the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium. Therefore, in addition to my work at Well Within DBT, I am actively engaged in teaching, research, and supervision of graduate and undergraduate students.
I am among the first cohort of individuals to be certified as a DBT therapist by the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification. I am also a trainer and a member of the advisory committee for Behavioral Tech, Dr. Linehan's signature company that provides trainings in DBT worldwide. In this capacity, I provide national and international trainings and consultations on DBT.
By integrating an evidence-based approach with a foundation of compassion, I am dedicated to helping individuals in immense suffering. My clinical expertise is in the treatment of individuals who struggle with managing their emotions and thus may experience a variety of difficulties including self-harm and suicidal behaviors, anxiety, and depression. I am an expert in the treatment of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), suicidal behaviors, and individuals with trauma histories. While I provide evidence-based care (e.g., cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness-based approaches) to treat these conditions, I also firmly believe in using a compassionate, non-judgmental stance in the treatment and care of my clients. I assume that the therapeutic relationship is a relationship between equals and consider it a privilege to support my clients in their path toward values-based living. And finally, I enjoy being in the outdoors, running, hiking, and drinking the perfect latte.
